The El Niño community, located in eastern Tijuana, is an area marked by poverty, marginalization, and vulnerability. In the surrounding zone, there are approximately nine neighborhoods but only two public schools, both operating with double shifts. The need for educational and emotional support is overwhelming.
At Refugio de Amor, we currently serve around 45 children daily, with 60 enrolled in total. For most of them, we are their only access to education. Many come from dysfunctional families, living with single mothers, grandparents, stepfathers, or even uncles and aunts who take care of them. These are often large families with very limited financial resources.
Most parents or guardians work informally, selling food or goods on the street to make ends meet. Access to healthcare is also extremely limited, as most families do not have medical insurance.
Despite the challenges, these children arrive with a desire to learn, play, and be part of a safe, loving space. Our site is simple but full of life, color, and care. Here, they not only receive academic support—they receive hope.
